The region and its inhabitants

Here, everyday life is permeated by culture – or is it culture that is permeated by everyday life? Many customs are centuries old. The people are down to earth and proud of their traditions. But what else would you expect in a region where history and modern life are so intimately interwoven? The clocks seem to tick more slowly here. Time isn’t so important. And the gulf separating the past and the present isn’t as wide as elsewhere. The important things in life are savored, cared for, and preserved for future generations.

Culture may even be described simply as that which makes life worth living.
